Modern day Shakespeare?

Last night FBF (Flatmate/Best Friend) and I watched "Yes" by Sally Potter, who is probably most famous for her film "Orlando" starring Tilda Swinton. If "Orlando" was the film that made people stand up and notice Potter; surely "Yes" will be remembered as her masterpiece.

What I wasn't aware of before I started watching the film is that the entire script is told in rhyming couplets - at first, FBF and I didn't realise this, it was so naturally done; which is testament to Potter's writing ability - the iambic pentamater never distracts from the film's content.

Even more arresting is the content of the film. Crossing over religion, sex and politics and at several points making me question my own attitudes to all of these things; it manages to be light and erotic yet thought-provoking and serious all at once.

Every member of the cast is superb - but most magnificent is Joan Allen, whom I've decided is fast becoming a firm favourite of mine. Brilliant. Please watch it!

great review. I had actually forgitten about this movie. I read a review and our writer absolutely loved it and, at the time, I was all "I *have* to see this film", but then I was all busy and missed it. Thanks for reminding me - I'll try to rent it this weekend. I *loved* Orlando. That movie still haunts me.

I have this on my rental queue! I moved it up the list so, hopefully, I get it sooner.

Thanks for the review. Sally Porter also did a film about learning tango. It was quite awhile ago..

TM, yes Sam Neill plays the husband... he made my skin crawl actually!

Markus, I've seen 'Pleasantville' which I loved her in, but nothing older... if you remember the name of the B&W one let me know.

Anhoni - see it and let me know! Orlando was amazing.

Angel/NM - please let me know what you think of the film once you've seen it!

DM - 'pivoting' - I like that word to describe me!

Bluez - let me know what you think... PS. I know I owe you a 'tag' for my weird habits... I'm thinking on that one... although surely you've already seen several of my weird habits!!!

Sar - thank you - you are kind (and have such glamorous shoes).

Dabich - what's up!?

Ziggy! I absolutely hated that movie, it literally incited me to violence! I think it's one of those that you either love or hate, due to it's content and delivery being quite unique. I didn't really see the point of making it, whereas Orlando is one of my favourites of all time. I even own the soundtrack! I've got 2 movies coming up, 2 For The Money which you might like, and Failure To Launch which is a silly Rom Com. I'll keep you posted anyhow. Big Ones!

FL: Incited you to violence? Such an extreme reaction..... you and I are obviously alike!
